There, a traditional Swedish Midsummer celebration awaits, complete with a flower-adorned maypole, live music, singing and dancing. For generations, islanders and returning summer guests have come together here, making it a natural meeting place for old friends and new.

Wet Rock Race

Every year on the Friday of week 30, some of Sweden’s most determined and adventurous athletes gather for Wet Rock Race – a spectacular swimrun race between Gullholmen and Käringön.

The course winds its way through the Bohuslän archipelago, with competitors alternating between open-water swimming and running across granite cliffs, jetties and coastal trails. The sea, the wind and the terrain make every race unique, demanding both strength and endurance.

For spectators, Wet Rock Race is as much a celebration as it is a competition. Along the course and in the harbour, visitors gather to cheer on the participants and enjoy the special atmosphere that emerges when the archipelago comes alive with sporting spirit, community and summer energy.

With Käringön as one of the event’s natural gathering points, Wet Rock Race has become a highlight of the summer calendar and a tribute to the sea, nature and the unique landscape of the Bohuslän coast.

Lobster fishing

Few traditions are as closely associated with Käringön as lobster fishing. As autumn arrives and the waters become crystal clear, both professional fishermen and recreational anglers gather for one of the most anticipated events on Sweden’s west coast.

The lobster season opens on the first Monday after 20 September each year. Before sunrise, boats leave the harbour and head out to sea, creating a special atmosphere across the island. For many, the day is as much about tradition, community and anticipation as it is about the catch itself.

Lobster fishing has been part of life on Käringön for generations, and many people still return to the island each autumn to experience opening day. Even for those who do not fish themselves, watching the boats set out at dawn, feeling the fresh sea air and taking part in one of the archipelago’s most cherished traditions is an experience in its own right.
