Getting to Käringön

Käringön is a car-free and bicycle-free island on Sweden’s rugged west coast. Reachable by ferry, private boat or water taxi, it offers a true island escape where cars are left behind on the mainland and life moves at a slower pace.

Ferry

The most common way to reach Käringön is via the ferry terminal in Tuvesvik, easily accessible by car or bus. Parking is available at the terminal for visitors arriving by car.

The ferry travels via Gullholmen before continuing to Käringön, with a journey time of just over 40 minutes. As seats cannot be reserved in advance, we recommend arriving with plenty of time to spare, especially during the summer season.

Tickets are most easily purchased through Västtrafik’s To Go app, but can also be bought from the ticket machine at the terminal or from the kiosk when open.

Boat taxi

For those who prefer a quicker journey or would like to arrange their transfer in advance, water taxis are available from the mainland.

During the summer season, scheduled departures also operate between Hälleviksstrand and Käringön. The crossing takes approximately 10–15 minutes, making it a convenient option for visitors who want to make the most of their time on the island.

Accessibility

Käringön has developed on nature’s terms, and accessibility therefore varies across the island.

It is generally possible to travel to and from the island using the regular ferry service, although the gangways can sometimes be steep. Large parts of the community are accessible by wheelchair, but some areas feature hills, uneven surfaces and changes in elevation.

Many of the island’s hotels, restaurants and shops are located on Skeppersholme, which is reached via a steep hill. While most businesses and swimming areas are not fully accessible, many visitors with reduced mobility still enjoy a comfortable stay with some planning and, where needed, assistance.

If you have any questions before your visit, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’ll be happy to help you plan your stay and make the most of your time on Käringön.
